The April book selection tells the story of Dave Pelzer, a child who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. While his mother plays tortuous games, Pelzer learns how to play along with his mother's games in order to survive. She no longer considers him a son but a slave, and no longer a boy, but an "it."
